CALETA TORTEL
Caleta Tortel, architecture and mysteries at the end of the Baker.
Known as the city of the catwalks, Caleta Tortel is a particular town. Founded in its majority by chilotes sawmills that exploited the extraction of the Cypress, main sustenance of that time.
Today, its more than 7 kilometers of platforms, bridges and stairs built in cypress wood, are a very particular architectural heritage.
The Baker Mystery.
Distant about 5 km. from Caleta Tortel, you can see the mouth of the Baker river, the largest in Chile. Sail to discover the mysteries of the nearby Isla de Los Muertos. Place that reflects a tragic history of abandonment and where today are the vestiges of that sad history. We recommend visiting this place, check the town’s tourist information office for departure itineraries.
ROUTE CONDITIONS
In this sector the route is gravel / gravel. When you travel from Cochrane to Caleta Tortel, the road becomes very winding. With several dangerous cornering areas, due to the narrowness of the road, you need to stay alert and drive defensively.
Be careful and park in suitable places. Sometimes the berm becomes very unstable and you can easily get stuck, especially on days of heavy rain.
REST AREAS
From Cochrane to Caleta Tortel, the easily accessible rest areas are close to the “el Barrancoso” sector. Afterwards, the road is submerged in a series of curves and, on leafy sectors that make parking more difficult.
These rest areas are rugged and are generally found near rivers or when lagoons are skirted. In the town of Caleta Tortel, there is a parking area where you can easily park the Motorhome. You have the alternative of deviating towards the airfield at the entrance of the town, where you can rest more alone.
