CERRO CASTILLO NATIONAL RESERVE

Cerro Castillo, The South Gateway to the Austral Highway.

Cerro Castillo National Park, has an extension of 179,500 ha and was created during the 70s, it houses emblematic species such as the huemul and the majestic condor. You can see these species along the route, since a part of the Carretera Austral crosses it from north to south (40 km approx.).

Its main attraction is the “Cerro Castillo”, an imposing massif of 2676 meters. Tall. This attraction rests on the valley of the Ibáñez river and marks the entrance way to the South. Here, among other things, you can walk the hill and follow in the footsteps of the ancient settlers in the region.

The town, inserted as a service center called Villa Cerro Castillo, has approximately 400 inhabitants. It is located 100 km. south of Coyhaique. Here it is possible to eat and lodge calmly, in addition, there are local guides that offer horseback riding or trekking along the trails that go up to the “Laguna Témpanos” at the foot of the hill.

Another activity you can do is visit the “Paredón de la Manos”. Distant 2 km. South of Cerro Castillo, there are a series of Tehuelches paintings, whose date is around 10,000 years old, being one of the icons of this part of Patagonia. (Don’t forget to visit the “Cerro Castillo School Museum”, the main information center in the sector.)

ROUTE CONDITIONS

The route in this sector is completely paved, being passable all year round. In winter, in the “Portezuelo Ibáñez” sector, there is generally frost or snow, for which extreme driving precautions must be taken. At that time the Motorhome is usually equipped with snow chains.

Cerro Castillo also marks the end of the paved route. From here to Villa O’Higgins (450 km. Approx.), The road is gravel and narrow, so you must watch your speed and keep an eye on the route.

REST AREAS

Along the southern Carretera Austral, it is possible to park and rest in several places. There are “natural” spaces and signposts without services, some quite large to park the Motorhome.

Among the established campsites, we recommend you visit the Laguna Chiguay campsite, 52 km away. south of Coyhaique. Further south, 32 km. we have the viewpoint to the valley of the Ibañez river and the “Cerro Castillo”. This viewpoint is one of the most visited and has a large space, ideal for enjoying the scenery.

Continuing south, on the Carretera Austral and 2 km distant. from Villa Cerro Castillo, there is a detour to the “Paredón de las Manos”. In this place you can stop and rest without problem. Likewise, there is a viewpoint and a rest area in the sector called “Dead Forest” (35 kms. From Cerro Castillo), however, you must evaluate this place while there, since sometimes a strong wind rises.
