FULL CARRETERA AUSTRAL (CALETA GONZALO TO VILLA OHIGGINS, FROM 15 DAYS)

Undoubtedly, the Carretera Austral is one of the most wonderful scenic routes in the world, with more than 1,000 km of landscapes that amaze anyone who likes nature, it is one of the must-sees in Patagonia. Its great variety of landscapes, from eternal pampas to forests that seem impenetrable, offer an infinity of activities to be enjoyed by anyone who visits it, creating an unforgettable experience and what better than doing it in Motorhome to have the freedom to visit it.
Starting from Coyhaique there is the option to start in the north or south, interchangeably. Towards the north we will find wonderful corners, some unknown (which we will tell you about in our itineraries) and also emblematic places such as the Queulat National Park, where you can see the Hanging Snowdrift, hot spring alternatives in the Puyuhuapi and La Junta sector, the Park Pumalin with its huge network is trails for all tastes, Lake Yelcho where you can fly fishing and even beach activities during the summer. Turning east we will find the town of Futaleufú known for being the world rafting capital which also offers multiple activities to do with family or friends etc.
On the other side, the first park that we will find from Coyhaique to the south will be the Cerro Castillo National Park, where it is possible to make sightings of flora and fauna, horseback riding and trekking. Then we continue to Puerto Rio Tranquilo, which gives us the option of some unmissables such as navigation to the Marble Chapels and a visit to the Exploradores Glacier. Continuing the trip, we find the town of Puerto Bertrand where one of the most beautiful and imposing rivers with turquoise waters is born, the Baker River, which invites visitors to visit it, either by rafting or floats suitable for the whole family, without forgetting that it is an excellent alternative for those who want to practice fly fishing.
We continue with our route to get to the Patagonia National Park, Valle Chacabuco sector, which offers us a classic landscape of the Patagonian steppe, where we can be surprised by the flora and fauna of the place. With a varied network of trails the stay in this place can vary according to the interests of the travelers since the park is very extensive.
Further south, we find the town of Cochrane that offers us a varied alternative of panoramas, the unmissable ones being the visit to the Calluqueo Glacier, trekking or sailing in Tamango, which is another sector of Patagonia Park, visit to Lake Cochrane, etc.
We continue our journey south. Along the way we will see countless lakes and rivers that make the landscape truly impressive. After approximately 5 hours of travel, we arrive at Caleta Tortel that surprises us with its unique architecture and traditions, there are no streets here, only walkways to visit the town. We can also navigate to the Montt Glacier or visit the Isla de los Muertos.
Now we are approaching the last section of the Carretera Austral “Villa O’Higgins”, for this we must cross the Mitchell Fjord and continue for another 4 hours of travel. Villa O’Higgins is a small town full of settlers who made their homeland in this place so far from the world. Here we recommend navigating the O’Higgins Glacier, exploring the surroundings, visiting the Rio Mayer sector, etc.
The return of our trip we do it by the same route, however to the north of Puerto Bertrand we will deviate towards Puerto Guadal and we will begin to skirt the General Carrera Lake on the eastern slope, reaching the town of Chile Chico. In Chile Chico, one of the must-sees is to visit another area of the Patagonia Park, the “Jeinimeni” sector known for the Moon Valley and the nailed stone, to reach the Jeinimeni Lagoon where we will find the area enabled for camping.
The last section is already done by crossing the Gral Carrera Lake by barge, to reach the last town on our route Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez, known for its crafts. We continue the trip to Coyhaique / Balmaceda.
Everything we can say for this route is little, we are convinced that touring it in Motorhome is by far the best alternative to enjoy all those corners that Patagonia has to surprise us, without a doubt it will be an experience that you will never forget.
