IN SEARCH OF THE BAKER RIVER

Discover the Baker River, one of the treasures of Patagonia.

The Baker River is born at the southern end of Lake Bertrand, on whose edge is “Puerto Bertrand”, a town of about 500 inhabitants.

The Baker sector provides unforgettable landscapes to those seeking a more contemplative experience. Therefore, if you want to connect with the place, the waterfalls in the confluence sector (I find the Baker and Neff rivers), it is a place that you should not miss.

For lovers of photography, you will find in its almost 175 kms. of route, hundreds of panoramic views to discover and capture all the flora and fauna so characteristic of the place.

There is also a wide range of activities to do around the river. In fact, they are possible to carry out both for the more adventurous and for the family. Horseback riding, trekking, fishing, boating and the famous Rafting in Puerto Bertrand are unmissable!

Along this route, there are two protected areas (“Parque Patagonia” and “Tamango National Reserve”.), Which are worth visiting.

ROUTE CONDITIONS

From Puerto Bertrand to the north, the path borders the Baker River in practically all its extension. As a result of the above, there are a large number of curves that force you to drive with greater caution.

REST AREAS

From Puerto Bertrand, plus less than 12 kms. To the south, the Motorhome can be parked almost anywhere. Of course, you must consider the height of the Motorhome (3 meters) to find the clearest spaces.

We recommend the “Confluencia” sector, where the road widens, allowing parking without complications. There is also the “Parque Patagonia“, 27 km distant. from the town of Puerto Bertrand.

To get to this place, you must follow the south route (16.7 km route). Then turn west towards Valle Chacabuco and 7 kilometers away you will find the entrance to the park. You must exercise extreme caution when traveling this path and, if possible, try to park at the entrance of the park, since due to the large number of loose stones and the narrowness of the road, vehicles suffer a lot on this path and can make you have a bad time if you continue into the park.

Another place we recommend is towards the San Lorenzo sector. There is a camping enabled for Motorhomes, just at the foot of the “Calluqueo Glacier” 43 km away. from the town of Cochrane by the route that goes to “San Lorenzo” (check the Travel Tips for information about the service provider). Also, further south on the way to “Caleta Tortel”, there are a couple of viewpoints where you can easily park and sleep.

We recommend, for a rest stop, the viewpoint of the “Chacabuco” lake, distant about 26 kms. south of Cochrane and a natural parking lot in the “Ñadis” sector, 43 kms. from the town of Cochrane. Here it exists alongside the Ñadis river, a natural parking area covered by a lenga forest.

Pioneers of the Baker Museum in the El Manzano sector

If you want to know and see how the settlers lived in this area of the Carretera Austral, it is possible to visit the "Pioneer Museum". This place located between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane, restores and maintains pieces of domestic use that the settlers used in their daily work, in addition to highlighting the Patagonian culture of the ancient inhabitants of the area. Generally it is open to the public, however if you see that it is closed, you can ask for the key to open and tour the museum in the caretaker's house located behind the poplars, about 150 meters from the museum house. Entry released. + Info: www.fundacionriobaker.cl - Email: Contacto@fundacionriobaker.cl

Stop in the "The Confluence" sector and see the junction of the Neff River and the Baker River.

Continuing south 12 km from Puerto Bertrand and only a few kilometers away from the Pioneer Museum of the Baker, it is possible to stop on the side of the road to contemplate such a majestic view of the “La Confluencia” sector. For the most intrepid there is a path that takes you to the very point of the confluence where you can immerse yourself in the environment at a distance of less than 800 meters from the access gate.

Horseback riding "El Saltón / Paso San Carlos".

This place is located in the “Los Ñadis” sector and its importance gains value for being recognized as a historical route built to take production out in the colonial period. In this particular place, the route is built on a rocky wall that blends into the landscape of the "Río Baker". From "Cochrane" you can take the Carretera Austral or Ruta 7 sur to the Barrancoso bridge, 45 km away. There is a camping site "La Araucaria", whose owner is the official guide of the place, with whom you can organize a guided tour.
